Every summer, we see the same pattern: as soon as the temperature climbs, the phone starts ringing with the same complaint - "my air con isn't blowing cold like it used to." It's one of the most common seasonal jobs we do, and also one of the most misunderstood. Most drivers assume their air con is either working or broken, when in reality it almost always fails gradually, losing a little performance every year until one hot day it finally isn't cold enough to notice. Here's what's actually going on, and why a re-gas is usually all it takes to sort it.
Why Air Con Loses Its Cool Over Time
A car's air conditioning system is sealed, but it isn't perfectly sealed forever. The refrigerant gas that carries heat out of the cabin is stored under pressure and circulates through a network of hoses, seals, and joints - and over time, tiny amounts of gas naturally permeate through these components, even with no obvious fault or leak to point to. It's common for a system to lose somewhere in the region of 10-15% of its refrigerant charge every year just through this normal seepage. Once the charge drops below what the system needs to work efficiently, the compressor struggles to build enough pressure, and the air blowing through the vents gets gradually warmer rather than stopping outright.
Signs Your Air Con Needs A Re-Gas
The most obvious sign is air that's noticeably less cold than it used to be, especially when you first switch it on after the car's been sitting in the sun. It's also worth paying attention to how long the system takes to cool the cabin down - a healthy system should feel a difference within a minute or so, while a low system can take much longer, if it makes a real difference at all. A musty or slightly damp smell when the air con first kicks in can also be a clue, since a system running low on refrigerant and pressure doesn't dehumidify as effectively, which can allow moisture (and eventually mould) to build up around the evaporator. If any of this sounds familiar, it's very likely a simple case of the system needing to be re-gassed rather than anything more serious.
What's Involved In A Re-Gas
A proper air con re-gas isn't just a top-up. The old refrigerant and the oil that lubricates the compressor are fully recovered from the system, which is then put under vacuum to draw out any moisture and check that it holds pressure properly - a system that won't hold a vacuum has a leak somewhere that needs finding before it's worth recharging. Once the system has been proven sound, it's recharged with the correct type and exact quantity of refrigerant for that specific vehicle, along with fresh compressor oil and, usually, a UV dye that makes any future leak far easier to spot with a UV lamp. Done properly, it's a job that takes under an hour but makes a night-and-day difference to how the system performs.
R134a vs R1234yf: Why The Right Gas Matters
Not every car uses the same refrigerant, and getting this wrong isn't just ineffective, it can actually damage the system. Most vehicles up to around 2016/2017 use R134a refrigerant, while newer models - following an EU-wide changeover aimed at reducing the environmental impact of air con systems - use R1234yf instead, which requires different equipment and handling. How Often Should It Be Done?
As a rule of thumb, we'd recommend having your air con checked and re-gassed roughly every two years, even if it still feels reasonably cold - by the time you can clearly feel the drop in performance, the system has often been running under-charged for a while already, which isn't doing the compressor any favours. Getting into a routine of checking it alongside your annual service or MOT is the easiest way to make sure it doesn't get forgotten about until the middle of a heatwave.
